Art in Public Space

The series 'Art in Public Space' was created to make art more accessible to the Ugandan society, since it is still very much reserved to a small part of society that has the means to access Theatres, Galleries, Cinemas and other common art spaces. Putting art into the public sphere can involve new audiences and on a long run help to sensitise a society for the importance of art and culture, including social and economic development and freedom of expression.
From an artistic point of view having that kind of exposure is not only a challenge in terms of "conquering" a new setting, but will also give a feedback different from the usual reactions within the common settings.

The project ‚Moving Images' Vol. 1

We are living in a more and more visualized world and visual impulses catch people's attention. The mainstream of visual information in a city like Kampala is reserved to advertisement, popular TV shows, sport event transmissions and music videos. Moving images addresses the viewer from big screens on junctions, at bars and restaurants and in shops – especially those that sell TV screens and similar devices. The selection of video material screened in the public sphere is rather similar.
Using the known to promote the unknown: making use of moving images to promote art in the public space. Therefore selected TV seller shops on Kampala Road will be screening a different kind of film/ video productions for one week.
Film is a medium that easily engages an audience or 'catches the eye'. The idea for the Art in Public Space series of an audience 'stumbling' into art will be put in practice by programming different video screenings within the selected shops, making use of the screens in the shop windows and inside the shops.

If you are an artist/ film maker/ video artist and want to be part of this project, please check out our call for application, which is posted in this event. More information will be posted here soon.
