Angélique Kidjo est toujours restée très attachée à ses racines. Chantant en fon, sa langue natale, ses textes font souvent référence à sa culture et à la religion vaudou. En 1996, après treize ans d'absence, elle décide de retourner à Ouidah, au Bénin.
