A journey between five towns whose former prosperity has waned; a surprise journey into a family history.

At first sight, Dia dos Pais, comes across as a road movie: a car speeds up a hilly road, oblivious to the landscape. The road leads through five small towns, each one like a ghost town. In the past, they had made their fortune from local coffee-growing and the architecture of the old mansions still recalls a splendor gone by. Yet, since 1976, since the train no longer stops there, no one comes to call. The farmers are dead, businesses closed. "When the tree was alive, all was well, but when the tree died, all the children left." Now only the elderly and the poor remain. The old folk watch the trains race by, while the youngsters complain about the price of the school bus and kill time playing football. Others simply trust in God and magic. Yet a region never dies alone. Its death also sweeps the world away. For these shadows, suspended in time devoid of action, a visitor is a phantom. Even an announced arrival is beyond belief. One of the finest portraits in the film, that of a nurse who has stayed on with her invalid mother, begins with a misunderstanding: one was convinced that the filmmaker would not come, the other got lost on the way. An unknown address for an impossible encounter. This is the moment the road movie takes asharp turn and plunges us into Faulkner-like world: a violent past, a family ruined by its patriarch…the filmmaker's family. (Cinéma du réel)

Father's day" is a trip through the Paraiba Valley region in São Paulo State reveals traces of the coffee culture boom in this part of Brazil. But the signs of prosperity are all gone, and even passenger trains are things of the past. In the sleepy towns of this region, dwellers sit, stew and wait, hoping for better days, a better job, a dramatic change. The young ones leave and the old ones stay behind. Among scattered accounts of an everyday life reduced to mere survival, another quest follows - a girl's search for a missing father. Unknown relatives fill the gap with their stories lost in time. O documentário "Dia dos Pais" é um road-movie. Uma viagem por quatro pequenas cidades da antiga e rica região do café, hoje abandonada. A importância histórica e econômica do passado transparece indiretamente pela memória da linha do trem e de suas antigas fazendas em contraste com o presente e o cotidiano pobre enfocados no filme. Em um estilo de cinema direto acompanha-se o dia-a-dia dos personagens e das cidades que compõem o documentário.
Seguindo viagem chegamos a Bananal, cidade de origem da família da diretora Julia Murat. Nesse momento Julia se torna personagem e vai contar a história de seu avô falido após uma trapaça de um amigo contador. A busca por conhecer as cidades do Vale do Paraíba passa a se misturar com uma busca pela identidade de sua família.
"Dia dos Pais" é produzido por Taiga Filmes e Vídeo, que já produziu 6 longas-metragens que estiveram nos mais importantes festivais do mundo, como Berlim, Sundance Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival.
Este filme é a estréia de Julia Murat e Leonardo Bittencourt. Julia dirigiu "A velha, o canto, as fotos", 2001 e "Ausência", 2003, além de vídeos experimentais, institucionais e a vídeo-instalação "Desvelar". Ela possui uma experiência diversificada como assistente de direção, assistente de câmera e montadora em 8 longa-metragens, publicidades, documentais e curtas. Leonardo Bittencourt é artista plástico e fotógrafo. Há seis anos trabalha profissionalmente como câmara. Realizou as exposições "Retrato falado" e "Horizonte", além de dirigir e fotografar o curta "…", que obteve menção honrosa na Mostra do Filme Livre 2007.
