في قرية سودانية، تلد امرأة ابنها "مزمل" بعد أعوام من الانتظار ولكن النبوءة الصوفية تفيد بأن الطفل سوف يموت عندما يبلغ العشرين من العمر. تمرّ السنوات ويكبر مزمل وهو محاط بنظرات الشفقة التي تجعله يشعر وكأنه قد مات قبل أن يحين الوقت، وتستمر الأحداث على هذا النسق إلى أن يعود سليمان إلى القرية بعد أن عمل مصورًا سينمائيًا في المدينة بعيدًا عن المعتقدات الصوفية للقرية. وهنا يرى مزمل العالم بشكل مغاير تمامًا من خلال جهاز عرض الأفلام السينمائية القديم الذي يقتنيه سليمان. وسرعان ما بدأت شخصية مزمل في التغيّر بصحبة سليمان ويتنامى الشكّ لديه يومًا بعد يوم حول صدق النبوءة المشؤومة. أما الأم فلا زالت تحاول بكل ما أؤتيت من قوّة كي تمنع وقوع النبوءة. ولكن بعد العديد من الانكسارات التي طالته وفقدان أبيه، يبدأ مزمل في حفر قبره بنفسه. وهكذا تستمر الأحداث حتى يبلغ مزمل عيد ميلاده العشرين فيصبح في هذا اليوم يغتاله الشكّ والحيرة بين الموت وركوب الحافلة التي تنقله إلى عالم يملؤه الشغف كي يتعرّف عليه
