Dorothy erwartet ein Kind von einem Mann, der zu lebenslänglicher Haft verurteilt ist. Schlecht und recht versucht sie, ihre jugendliche Tochter zu erziehen und das Baby zu behalten. Das Sozialamt übt Druck auf sie auf, damit sie abtreibt, doch Dorothy lehnt ab. Ein Polizist vergewaltigt ihre Tochter. Ausser sich vor Schmerz tötet ihn Dorothy. Im Gefängnis wird sie so schlecht behandelt, dass sie alles verliert.

Kommentar
Mit seiner bewegten und nahen Kamera und mit seinem authentischen Anstrich wirkt dieser Spielfilm wie ein Dokumentarfilm, ohne jemals platt propagandistisch zu wirken. Gerima lässt uns in die materiell verfallene, aber moralisch starke Welt eines Schwarzenghettos eintauchen. Die Frauen spielen darin eine entscheidende Rolle. Völlig schutzlos kämpfen sie auf ihre Art gegen die Gesellschaft der "money makers", die ihnen den Krieg erklärt hat und die sie mit ihren Nachkommen loswerden will. Die allgegenwärtige Zärtlichkeit alterniert mit politischen Überlegungen. Dank der packenden visuellen Metaphern sowie eines präzisen und vielfältigen Einsatzes der Tonspur, die für dieses dichte Dokument wesentlich ist, werden soziale Ungerechtigkeiten aufgedeckt ? ein ohrenbetäubender Aufschrei.

Without ever lapsing into facile propaganda, a mobile and close camera endows this fiction film with the texture of a documentary, of reality. Gerima takes us to the materially broken-down but morally strong black ghetto, in which women play a dominant and active role. They fight in their own way and without protection against a society of moneymakers that has decided to get even of their children and them. Omnipresent tenderness alternates with political reflections. Poignant visual metaphors as well as a refined and sophisticated use of the sound track ? an essential contribution to this dense document, this deafening roar ? help denounce social injustice.
