At the age of twenty, I left my hometown, Hamburg, for Paris to lead a life far from the paths all laid out by my family. I didn't know what I was looking for, just the certainty of what I wanted to run away from: family tradition, music for example. Through my work as a photographer, I have been working for a long time on questions of identity and belonging. After twenty years on the banks of the Seine, I returned to Hamburg to find out what the port city of my childhood meant to me in terms of roots and "heimat" (in English "home", where I come from). A filmed diary, where my own testimony intertwines with snippets of personal stories and different protagonists I met in Hamburg.
