Algiers, 1993: Beginning of the civil war. Since Madame Osmane's husband left her, her lodgers have had to endure the hysterical behavior of their landlady. A member of the underground movement during the War of Independence, Madame Osmane is haun-ted by the fear that she might lose her dignity. Rather than trying to discipline herself, she puts her energy into controling the activities and attitudes of her lodgers. One day, she learns that her daughter is in love. The realization that she will someday be left alone brings Madame Osmane, who is still herself a very attractive woman, to a crisis: her'Harem' - the castle in which she can control the small world around her - is now about to crumble.
