Ernesto Contreras was born in 1969, Veracruz, Mexico.
Graduate from the Center for Cinematographic Studies of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. His short films Sueño Polaroid (1997), Sombras que pasan (1998), Ondas hertzianas (1999), El milagro (2000), Tardes (2000) and Los no invitados (2003) have been screened in festivals around Latin America, United States and Europe and have received several national and international awards. He has been grantee of the National Fund for Culture and Arts, as well as the Rockefeller, Ford and Typa foundations. He participated in the Berlinale Talent Campus 2 and Cine en Construcción 10 in San Sebastián. Párpados azules (Blue Eyelids) is his first feature film and won various awards and was part of the official selection of the 46th International Critics' Week during the 60th Cannes Film Festival in 2007. In 2010, Contreras co-directed a documentary on the Mexican rock band Café Tacvba's 20th anniversary (included in the World Cinema Amsterdam programme).
