Prix Nobel de la paix en 2004, la Kenyane Wangari Maathai s'est fait connaître par son combat politique et écologique avec la création, en 1977, du Green Belt Movement ("Mouvement de la ceinture verte"). Forte de quelque 35 millions de plantations, cette entreprise de reforestation lui vaut depuis le titre affectueux de "mère des arbres".
