Mahmud is a loving husband, doting father and a devout but undogmatic Muslim. After his mother dies, however, Mahmud's world is turned upside when he discovers that not only was he adopted at birth, but he's actually Jewish and his real name is Solly Shimshillewitz! As the somewhat distressed Mahmud-now-Solly tumbles headlong into a full scale identity crisis, the only person he can turn to is an alcoholic Jewish cabbie who agrees to give him lessons in the fine art of Jewishness. This exploration of religious identity is highly entertaining and very funny indeed.
